Working at the Intergovernmental Organisation

I come back after a quite long hiatus, haha.

Yesterday, as a part of my training ahead of the 25 October, I declare myself to commit for 1 day 1 post on this blog. The post will not be long, only 300 words as I want to practice my writing skill for the upcoming online exam. So, today topic is working about "Working at the Intergovernmental Organisation".

I am currently working at the intergovernmental organization in Jakarta. I have been working here for six months. Have you heard about ASEAN? Yes, the Association of South East Asian countries which consists of 10 member states is one of the regional organization which headquartered in Jakarta. I am working at the ASEAN Secretariat which basic function is to provide for greater efficiency in the coordination of ASEAN organs and for more effective implementation of ASEAN projects and activities.  (

So, our day to day task is mainly to facilitate the Member States on coordination and the implementation of the organ projects and activities.  As an intergovernmental organization, the conduct of ASEAN is based on the agreement of the 10 member states. On 20 November 2007, the leaders of ASEAN Member States signed the ASEAN charter which sets the rule and regulation governing this organ. To support the works of this organization, the ASEAN Secretariat was set up as early as 1976 and until now, the secretariat is expanding as the ASEAN organs grow.

Working at the intergovernmental organization means you need to familiarize yourself with a high-level bureaucratic and diplomatic protocols. You have to be aware of your position, responsibility and you have to follow the rules and regulations, standard operating procedures and the practice. Please bear in mind that you work in an organization that already have established practices, so you have to learn quickly and do not hesitate to ask/clarify something which you do not understand. Do not make a new normal, just try to improve your communication skills to your supervisors and your fellow colleagues. 

It might look cool when someone heard about your current job and your office. But after all, the best part of the job is when you enjoy doing it and you fond of what you do. You will find it rewarding in the end when you know that you have learned more than you give.
